I turned the Mayor’s Parlour into a Thinkspace on Friday 13 September 2013 pledging my support for the new initiative designed to encourage young people to try software development as a career.

Thinkspace is an initiative seeking to encourage schools to establish a “Thinkspace” within the school for young people to explore and develop software and apps in light of the high demand for such skills as Northern Ireland transforms towards a knowledge based economy.

I encourage all schools plus the Departments for Education and Enterprise to consider this new initiative, backed by major figures such as Apple Founder Steve Wozniak, Google Chief Vic Gundotra, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales and Richard Branson.

The benefit of software and apps to businesses and the public sector clear with customers and citizens able to access information and purchase items in a much more convenient manner.

With 35% of NI consumers accessing the internet from a mobile phone (OFCOM 2012), 60% of NI consumers own a Smartphone (Mintel 2012) and NI tablet computer capital of UK with almost one in three households owning one tablet the need to develop skills in this area is apparent.
