Menorca Review

We found this holiday from Direct Holidays web site for £89 each and therefore didn’t expect the accommodation to be of the highest quality but, thankfully, we can report that we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were decent and the facilities good.

We hired a car on the first day after walking to Fornelles (30mins walk) and found this to be extremely useful. Without the car we would have probably been very very bored. We have since discovered that you can access Fornelles via a cliff walk rather the road which would obviously save time.

The entertainment was okay but the restaurant seemed to be very pricey. Whilst the pool was relatively cold, after about 5 minutes your body got used to it. In May the rooms did need some heating but a few blankets kept us warm along with plenty of drink from the SYP Supermarket in Ciutadella (we drank fifteen bottles for Cava which for €1.50 a bottle was a bargain!).

Alongside the lack of heating, a couple of other hiccups occurred in relation to the room, namely that the electric socket came out the wall and the wardrobe door came off but these were easily fixed and only minor.

In terms of cooking, we resorted to barbeques and visiting the restaurants in Fornelles (€10 per head for decent food). The restaurant in Les Salines opposite the entrance to the Menorca County Park was very good & is highly recommended. However, the Le Cactus restaurant near the complex is dear and staff rude who like adding extra items you don’t order nor eat onto your bill.

The flat only had three cooker rings, toaster  & kettle plus fridge. No oven or microwave was supplied.

We, along with many other residents, also had problems with our television which initially only provided six foreign language channels then, after the “technician” called, we had eleven including BBC One and the opportunity to view a selection of DVDs but this only lasted a day. Whilst we were watching the 6pm news the tv then went bang and we had to resort to drinking games to keep ourselves occupied on the last night (terrible life we know!).

The cleaning was okay but they didn’t seem keen to collect our many bags of rubbish and empty Cava bottles on a regular basis which we left outside.

All the issues raised in this review were minor and for £89 we feel we got an absolute bargain. From someone who has high standards I felt happy & content.

However, if you have children I would not advise you choose the complex as they probably will get very bored.

The MyTravel flight from and to Belfast was good, staff helpful and food tasty.

If you are considering staying our few tips would be to a) if the weather is going to be cold at night, bring a heater etc. to heat the apartment b) hire a car c) visit the Spanish shops & restaurants as opposed to those in the resort / those used by tourists (such as the Hypermarket in Ciutedella which was obviously for the English and accordingly charged higher prices) d) if you have a small DVD player bring it along with some games such as Twister etc. to kill the boredom. If you are arriving late on the first night either visit Oktapi Bar near the complex (pizzas are however expensive but drink nice and staff very friendly) or bring some food with you.
