Born in Bangor Hospital, Northern Ireland to Paul and Madeleine Muir during one of the hottest summers ever experienced in Northern Ireland with water pipe bans etc.. 1976 was characterised by three UK number one hits for Abba: "Mamma Mia", "Fernando", and "Dancing Queen".
Celebrated the HRH Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee. The Silver Jubilee was unfortunately not as successful as her Golden Jubilee in 2002 but provided an opportunity for my mum to dress me up complete with a crown, using Fruit Pastilles as pretend diamonds!
As a child I lived briefly with my father’s parents in Bangor and then in Comber before finally moving to Rathgill Estate, Bangor in 1978. My sister, Nadine, was born in October 1980 and joined the family in celebrating the marriage of His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer, on the 29th July 1981.

On the big day we celebrated the party in a large marquee as part of the estate’s combined celebrations which my mother and father and helped organise.
In 1981 I also commenced education at Connor House Preparatory School, Clifton Road, Bangor, a private Primary School, owned by Bangor Grammar School.

After my mother had just successfully campaigned for post box and bus service to the estate we moved to Marquis Rise also in Bangor a couple of years later, where I remained until 1996.  I have vivid memories of the Falkland's 1982 War including the news flash which announced the fire onboard HMS Sheffield.
After my mother and fathers relationship broke up in 1985 my mother chose of avoid the high private schooling fees at Connor House and moved me to St Malachy’s Primary School, Clandeboye Road. An excellent Catholic Maintained School just around the corner!
Some people ask when I realised that I was gay. After lots of reflection I think it was on 25 December 1986 when Colin Russell (a character in the BBC Soap Eastenders played by Michael Cashman) switched on his computer and it wished him a Merry Christmas. I was aged 10. Colin was sad because the previous year it had been his boyfriend Barry Clark who had since left him. I sympathised with Colin and aspired to having a boyfriend.
After having failed the 11 Plus Transfer Entrance Exam in 1988, (which is now due to be abolished) I moved to St Columbanus’ College on the Ballymaconnell Road. The school motto is "Lex Dei in Corde Meo" meaning "The law of god in my heart". Current Principal Liam Perry defines it as "an invitation to all in our College community to respond to God's law through living with love in our hearts for all". In my Third Year at St Columbanus’ I was awarded the Services to the School Cup and in the Fourth Year the Northern Bank Business Studies Cup. I finished my studies at St Columbanus’ in June 1993, having obtained Grade A Business Studies, Grade B Geography and Grade C Maths, English, French and English Literature GCSE.
